Chapter 4 - The Brain + Body Mental Model

Last updated 2026-07-13. This page hosts the cross-disciplinary reading paths into the brain + body metaphor, the metaphor's honest limits, and pointers into the academic cognitive-architecture lineage the model draws from.

Companion activity

Map one AI tool or workflow you use onto the brain + body regions: prefrontal, working memory, long-term memory, dialog interface, motor + sensory, nervous system, and above-individual layer.

What this chapter argues

The brain + body metaphor earns its place because it gives psychology, philosophy, cognitive science, neuroscience, and STS specialists a usable bridge into AI architecture without forcing them to learn a new vocabulary from scratch. The metaphor is imperfect - Chapter 16 unpacks the limits in full - but the cross-disciplinary entry it provides is worth the imprecision. The five brain regions plus the connecting nervous system and external body give a stable scaffold for the rest of Part II.

Key sources

The chapter grounds the metaphor in closed-loop neuroscience rather than in an internal design document. Its central caution: neuroscience does not establish one canonical structure called the brain-body loop; it supports the more careful claim that feedback circuits are pervasive and that nervous systems are embodied and environmentally embedded.
